A strange disease hits Taiwan just before the turn of the new
millennium. Despite evacuation orders, tenants of a rundown apartment building stay put, including shop owner Hsiao-Kang
(Kang-sheng Lee).
One day, a plumber arrives at Hsiao-Kang's apartment to check the pipes. He drills a small hole
into the floor, which comes down through the ceiling of the woman downstairs (Kuei-Mei Yang).
The hole never gets
repaired, and this leads to some tension between the two residents.

Si tratta del quarto film diretto da Tsai Ming-Liang, nato in
Malesia e trasferitosi nel 1977 a Taiwan, dove si è laureato in arte drammatica all'Università della cultura
cinese. Anche in questo film il regista continua ad esplorare il suo tema preferito, quello della solitudine urbana.
Come già ne "Il fiume" (uscito in Italia), anche questo film è utilissimo per capire a quale prezzo sia stato
pagato il boom dell'economia taiwanese degli ultimi dieci anni. Attraverso la descrizione di due solitudini che
lentamente si avvicinano, il film costruisce uno scenario angoscioso e straziato, la radiografia di un dolore dal quale
i due riescono forse ad uscire, solo abbandonandosi al senso dell'amicizia come primo gradino verso il recupero di
valori più forti. Film concepito come una cruda, realistica metafora, intercalato da omaggi ai musical di Hong Kong
anni '50, da vedere, pur tra momenti validi ed altri un po' calligrafici, per il modo diretto con cui indica nelle ansie
spirituali uno dei veicoli di
comunicazione del prossimo futuro.
